2200 years ago, an ancient Arab tribe called Nabataean settled in Petra (southern Jordan). Nabataeans were involved in the caravanning business of Arabian frankincense and myrrh, Indian spices and African ivory. When trade routes shifted and there was lesser demand for frankincense as Christianity replaced pagan religions, Petra was abandoned. It was only rediscovered in 1812 by a Swiss traveler.
During the survey on the New 7 wonders of the World last 07/07/07, the ancient red-rose city of Petra made it to the list. The monumental temples you see in the pics are all carved in sheer rock and they are more than 2000 yrs old! Really amazing! The temple (topmost pic) is called "The Treasury". If it looks familiar, it's because it was featured in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade".
BTW, it's a 6km exploration walk to Petra and no matter how tempted you are to ride a horse or donkey, don't! Or you're gonna miss a lot!:) Don't forget to apply sunblock, wear really comfy shoes and bring a bottle of mineral water:)
