Charice: Little Girl With Supersonic Voice

Frankly, I am not easily impressed, especially when hypeprecedes a performance. Honestly, I never even took a second look at this younggirl, now the toast of the town, even after I already heard so much good thingsabout her as a singer.

Then, I saw her performing in The Ellen Degeneres’ show. She was pretty awesome, considering hersize, but she’s still a Filipino, and she could only be a curiosity among thewhite bread Americans.

I heard that she went on to appear in shows like E Daily Top Ten, The Paul O’Grady Show.Well, I told a friend about a little girl named Banig who had taken the same route but disappeared just aspredicted of most Filipino talents trying to make it in continental USA.

Recently, I saw her performing in Oprah, and had everyone inthe audience, including Oprah, exclaiming “wow!”  Honestly, I felt proud I was watching aFilipino talent in that show, and I could only applaud Charice Pempengco for her talent.

Now, knowing what she had gone through before she became asensation in the US – she was recently featured in a show produced by David Foster (theproducer-arranger-songwriter behind some of the best-selling artists in theworld now including Celine Dion, Josh Groban, and Michael Buble) in Las Vegas that also featured Andrea Bocelli, Michael Buble and Josh Groban, Alicia Keys, and KatherineMcPhee. Charice’s performance of the DollyParton original “I Will Always Love You,” which was popularized by WhitneyHouston earned for the Filipino belter a standing ovation twice!  Foster, apparently, believes in Charice’stalent. In fact, it was David Foster whointroduced Charice to Oprah Winfrey.

I have nothing but admiration for this girl who grew upjoining amateur singing contests wherever possible.

She joined BatangKampeon (3rd runner up), LunchBreak Bulilit (finalist), MTB BulilitStar Quest (Champion) and the mostrecent, Little Big Star (2ndrunner up, Big Division). Since she wasn’t the big winner, she didn’t matter tomany. And it needed Ellen Degeneres, Oprah, and David Foster for Filipinos(including myself and I say mea culpa) to take notice of her.

I am glad that Star Records has come out with Charice’sfirst major solo album entitled Charice. The album should become a collector’s item , as it contains classic hit songsas sung by Charice in her winning trademark style. The album includes “I HaveNothing,” “I Will Always Love You,” “I Am Telling You,” “Mama,” “Born To LoveYou Forever,” and “It Can Only Get Better!”

“It is only but natural for Star Records to produce an albumfor her. She is a definite goldmine dahilnapakagaling naman ng bata. In fact, she has been part of three StarRecords albums already namely, Little BigStar, Little Big Deeds and TeenPopstar.  It’s high time that tayo, her  mgakababayan  accord her the samerecognition that international shows had given her.” Star Records Audio UnitHead Nixon Sy relates. “And we’reproud to say that Charice gave a world-class performance in her album, she gaveit her all and we’re all happy with the results!”
