Pinoy comedy king joins world’s octogenarians today

Yes, dear readers, Dolphy (born Rodolfo Vera Quizon) is now 80 years old, and has joined the world’s longest living individuals.

With life expectancy becoming shorter with reckless lifestyles, Dolphy’s longevity is hard to imagine considering what he has gone through in life, the pressures in the entertainment industry, and his responsibility as a man of the house, father to his children, and not to mention his amazing relationships with his women.

Someone who reaches this age and still looking fit and healthy is one reason Dolphy is celebrating. The comedy king is being feted by ABS-CBN with a birthday special at the Meralco Theater tonight that will be telecast on Aug. 3 as the feature on ABS-CBN’s Sunday’s Best.

Wednesday night last week, Eric Quizon launched his father’s biography entitled Hindi Ko Ito Narating Mag-isa which captures the drama and magic of his father’s life.

Tonight’s celebration will also be a gathering of stars who will perform for the comedian in a once-in-a lifetime tribute.

Opening the program are singing sensations from different generations and genres: Kuh Ledesma, Bituin Escalante, Toni Gonzaga, Sarah Geronimo, Iya Villana, Christian Bautista, Mark Bautista, Jed Madela and Charice Pempengco. Stills of different Dolphy abstracts will be shown as Sam Milby, Robert Seña, Sheryn Regis and Ronnie Liang sing a medley of numbers.

Offering a message for the Comedy King is ABS-CBN President Charo Santos–Concio.

The Meralco Theater is expected to have a fiesta-like atmosphere with performers taking the centerstage one after another.

Performers who will make this an unforgettable affair include comedians Ai-Ai Delas Alas, Vhong Navarro and Pokwang, singers Rachel Ann Go, Richard Poon, Erik Santos and Audie Gemora and TV personalities Roderick Paulate, Archie Alemanya and Carmi Martin.

Also expected to make their presence felt are Dolphy’s co-stars in his days at Sampaguita Pictures, RPN, and ABS-CBN, among them Gloria Romero, Susan Roces, Eddie Gutierrez, Nova Villa, Sharon Cuneta, Maricel Soriano, Vic Sotto and Willie Revillame and a special participation by Zsa-Zsa Padilla.

Young stars will be there too, like Shaina Magdayao, Rayver and Rodjun Cruz, Tim Espinosa, Thou Reyes, Michael Williams and JM Rodriguez.

Chocoleit, Pooh, and Vica Ganda. Sons Epi and Vandolph will also be there to make sure the crowd will be laughing from beginning to end.

The evening will be completed by Dolphy’s sharing of some of his experiences and sentiments in the industry – from the happiest to even the lowest of times.
